The Ministry of Transport has decided to deploy the members of commuter vigilant committees to beef up security in passenger buses.

Minister Dalas Alahapperuma says a member will be mobilized each passenger bus. Accordingly both private and SLTB buses will be fully searched before the departure. The buses will only leave the bus stand following a full security checkup by the member of vigilant committee.

The minister added that special measures have been taken to strengthen the security of buses running long distances. The Red Cross society has agreed to provide explosive tracing devices to the transport ministry. At media briefing in Colombo the minister stressed the need of the public to be intensively vigilant on their safety.
