In the MARAWILA Police area nearly five (05) km away from MARAWILA Town in the PUTTALAM area on the PUTTALAM - CHILAW road, a team of Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) technicians had visited the electricity transformer in the MAHAWEWA area this morning around 9.10 to check the Security Fence enclosing the transformer and also to conduct an inspection.
Having observed a claymore mine set up to destroy the transformer, they had immediately informed the MARAWILA Police.
The Police with the Army had immediately rushed to the scene and taken action to increase the security in the area while the Army Bomb Disposal Team defused the explosive device. Timely action by the CEB team, the Police & the Army not only averted what would have been a disaster but also prevented the people in the area from being deprived of their supply of electricity.
Investigations reveal that the Claymore mine weighed five (05) kg.
