The government has proposed to further strengthen the parliamentary committee system and give more responsibilities to the opposition.
Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe revealed this information addressing the 7th session of the world human rights council in Geneva. A group of the Geneva parliamentary association has drafted a special report in this regard and handed it over to the Sri Lankan Government.
The report has proposed to set up seven main parliamentary committees.  The government has already agreed to set up human rights, low and humanitarian problems committee, the first of these entities.
This committee will be set up with the consent of the president. Proposals included in this report will be submitted to leaders of the political parties that represent in parliament.
