LONDON: British police say they have arrested a man as part of an investigation into the overseas financing of the Tamil Tigers rebel group.

The Metropolitan Police says a 51-year-old man has been arrested under British anti-terror laws. The force says in a statement that Tuesday's arrest in Swindon, west of London, was connected to an investigation into raising money and procuring equipment for the banned group.

Last week police arrested three other men suspected of terrorism offenses for allegedly supporting the group. Police say they remain in custody.

The Tamil Tigers have been fighting for 25 years for an independent homeland for minority ethnic Tamils. The Tamils have been marginalized for decades by governments dominated by the Sinhalese majority.
