The government says the Chief Minister of the Eastern Province will be named within the next few days.
The Chief Minister will be nominated after discussions with the representatives of parties who contested for the election under the ticket of United Peoples’ Freedom Alliance.
President Mahinda Rajapakse is due to call discussions with the representatives shortly.
Speaking at a media briefing held in Colombo this morning Minister Maithreepala Sirisena said an agreement was made in this regard before the election.
He noted victory of the Eastern Provincial Council Election is the greatest achievement made by President Mahinda Rajapakse during his tenure of last two and half years.
Speaking on the occasion Minister Rajitha Senarathne pointed out Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pilleyan had achieved a mandate, which could not claimed by Prabhakaran. He also pointed out the number of votes won by United National Party in the Presidential Election has been decreased in this provincial council election.
Meanwhile, Minister Dalas Alahapperuma emphasized it is the objective of the government to empower provincial councils according to the 13th constitution amendment.
He also disclosed final report of the All Party Representative Committee is due to be issued by the end of next month or the first week of July.
