Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapakse observes that the Api Vavamu Rata Nagamu national food production programme is a leading programme of the Mahinda Chinthana pledge to enhance local food production. He said this drive enables the country to successfully overcome the impact of the food crisis experienced globally.

The President made these observations at the first meeting of the Presidential Task Force for the national operation 2007-2010 under the Api Vavamu Rata Nagamu programme.

The meeting was held at the Presidential Secretariat Thursday . The President pointed out that with the introduction of open economy the country’s agriculture economy broke down. This resulted in many crops that could be produced locally being imported.

President Rajapakse calls for the support of all to make the agriculture drive a success. He noted that the present government is building a stable economy while defeating terrorism.

At Thursday’s meeting Minister Maithreepala Sirisena presented to the President the plan of the national food production drive compiled by the presidential task force. Relevant documents were also handed over today to a group of specialists responsible for the task of producing 32 crop varieties the import of which has been restricted.
