The motion to extend the state of emergency by one month was passed in parliament this evening by a majority of 87 votes.
106 votes were cast in favour of the motion while 19 votes opposed it. The JVP voted for the motion together with the government. The TNA and the Western Peoples’ Front rejected the motion and the UNP abstain from voting.
MPs of the SLMC were absent in the house at the time of voting. Making the reply speech on behalf of the government Minister W.D.J. Senevirathne charged that the UNP is not genuinely contributing to solve the national issue in order to gain political advantage.
