GSP+: EU Ambassadors warn of dire consequences

Visiting European Union (EU) Human Rights Ambassadors have warned of dire consequences in the event Sri Lanka fails to comply with international human rights conventions and improves its human rights record in the war-torn island. Human Rights Ambassadors from Spain and Netherlands were in the country last week on what seemed to be a fact-finding mission. The delegation, which also included Sweden, was in the country to get a firsthand impression of the human rights situation in the country. The visit, it is learnt, was tied to the much-hyped Generalised System of Preferences (GSP+) trade scheme benefit. The delegation had met with a cross-section of people, including opposition Parliamentarians and human rights activists. The delegation had impressed that their stand was that the government must work towards improving the human rights situation in the country and comply with international conventions on human rights, which if successfully carried out, would pave the way towards obtaining the GSP+. Meanwhile, Civil Monitoring Commission Convenor and Colombo District MP Mano Ganesan, who had met with members of the delegation, charged that the government was neither complying with international conventions, nor working towards maintaining an acceptable human rights situation in the country. “I brought to their notice the challenge everyone was facing today, which was the right to life,” Ganesan said. He emphasised that extra judicial killings and white van abductions have continued unabated. “I urged them to use their influence and to pressurise the government into complying with all conventions related to human rights,” he added.
