President professedly against jungle laws ; his Minister for it ?
It is the consensus that law making in the country has decreased and law breaking has increased in the recent past with law makers taking the lead in the law breaking. This truth was perfectly illustrated when the Vocational training Minister of the Govt., Piyasena Gamage and about 200 of his goons went on a rampage at a Forest reserve complex in the Southern province attacking even a Forest reserve officer who bled from the ear as a result.
Not enough the lawlessness practiced by the politicos in Govt. offices , streets and against law abiding citizens as were witnessed immediately after the election results announcement , this Minister has thought it fit even to intrude into the forest reserve in Udugama and hold a meeting without prior permission. The most disgusting part of this episode is this violent group had even disturbed and disrupted the Forest officers’ lecture to about 175 students and at least 10 Buddhist monks at that point of time. The Minister’s gang had demanded food , and when they could not be served they had allegedly consumed liquor against forest reserves regulations and even used the Kitchen forcibly and prepared food.
When the Forest officers objected , the Minister’s coordinating secretary and his gang have attacked a Forest officer Sunil Ranaweera who is now hospitalized at Karapitiya Hospital.
As always , no one has been arrested so far over this incident though a complaint has been made to the Udugama Police. Police lethargy too has been attributed to political influence and power exerted.
The Nation must thank the Minister for his concern for the common man in the streets , as he was careful enough this time to choose the forest reserves to practice his jungle laws . But there is another question to be answered …. when these bestial humans go to practice their jungle laws in the forests , whether they would drive out the wild beasts to the towns ? Perhaps the Minister and his gang are as much ignorant of this fact as they are of the laws of the land. Hope the President will enlighten them on at least that aspect of knowledge .
