Adjust font size: Decrease font Enlarge font
image The NARA Organization has undertaken an accelerated project of giving warnings regarding Tsunami disaster over hand phones said its Chairman K. Happuthanthri.

The Ocean Research Centre is carrying on round the clock explorations in the sea pertaining to waves, erosions and tempestuous situations. The outcome of the research such as Tsunami, earthquake and stormy situations etc. could be disseminated through hand phones then and there.

Meanwhile, there are possibilities of an earthquake affecting Sri Lanka soon according to Director of Geological Survey Department Dr. A.K. Dissanayake. He says that such an earthquake could be of the magnitude that affected Sumatra Island on the 12th of September.

The Director Dissanayake further said that the earthquake in Sumatra occurred at a depth of 30 Kilometres and as such the ill effects to the neighbouring countries were minimal. Had it occurred at a depth of about 10 Kilometres, it could have caused damages similar to the 2004 December Tsunami. He warned the people to be extra cautious in future.
